January 2010

Pastor's Corner

I am starting a sermon series called the RELATIONSHIP PRINCIPLES OF JESUS. It is from a book by the same title, authored by Pastor Tom Holliday of Rick Warren's church.

He says there are 6 relationship principles that are in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

 They are:
Ø
Place the Highest Value on Relationships.
Ø  Love As Jesus Loves You
Ø
Communicate From the Heart
Ø
As You Judge, You Will Be Judged
Ø
The Greatest Are the Servants
Ø    Treat others As You Want Them to Treat You.

We were never meant to live life in a vacuum. In fact , you cannot fulfill your life's purposes by yourself. You need other people's help, and they need yours. We are better together. This is called relational renewal. This is what the sermon series is all about. You must not only learn to love God with all your heart (personal renewal), you must learn to love your neighbor as yourself (relational renewal). This sermon series is for all folks who are married, single, more mature or young.

This series, hopefully will change the Relationships in our lives.

LOOKING BACK - LOOKING AHEAD

As I reflect on where South Shore was a year ago and look at where we are now and where we are going, I find myself somehow easily forgetting the challenges of the past and eagerly looking forward to what 2010 will bring us.  I feel a strong sense of unity and joy as we work together as a church family to chart the future and become a part of the wonderful growth and activities planned for next year.  As we begin preparations for starting the Celebration Service on Tuesday nights, beginning in February, I am reminded of how wonderful that service was - the message, the fellowship and the opportunity to get to know each other while enjoying a simple meal.

Sallie and I also look forward to the continued growth of our Sunday School program, our Youth Program and our Outreach

Ministries.  As Pastor Dick told us last week, we are once again a strong force in our community, glorifying God in all that we do.  We are no longer in a survival mode - we have survived and now we are once again growing.  It is wonderful to look out each Sunday at our congregation and see nothing but smiles and joy as we worship God in harmony and love.  One can truly feel the presence of The Holy Spirit here at SSCC.

May God continue to bless us, our church and our collective ministry as we serve Him now and this coming year.

Peace

Pastor Tom

Salvation Army Canteen

(Providing Food For the Homeless)

As part of our Outreach Program for the needy, South Shore’s Evangelism Committee will be coordinating the Salvation Army Canteen Project, late in the afternoon on Saturday, January 23rd. We will be driving the Salvation Army van (John Bedford) and handing out 200 sack lunches and drinks at designated spots.  Each sack lunch distributed will contain a sandwich, chips, fruit and cookies.

We would also like to give away socks to those who need them.  So we would appreciate any donation of socks that you can make.  Used clean socks are alright to donate.  Helping those in need keep warm is a challenge during the winter months.  We want to thank you in advance for your generous donations to this cause.  The Salvation Army does this project weekly!  We know we have in Corpus Christi about 5,000 homeless including children.

Bits and Pieces

It was a beautiful Christmas Eve here at SSCC.  We had over 160 adults and children in attendance.  Our prayers were answered.  The service was beautiful with the music and candle lighting.  The Christmas Play, directed and written by Karen Steffy, was awesome.  The Children’s Festival was a joyous and fun experience with Santa Clause as a special guest!  The congregation donated over a 150 gifts and Santa distributed two to each child and we still had some to donate to the children of the Homicide Group.  Someone overheard one child say that these were the only gifts that they would be getting.   Doesn’t it warm your heart to know that you made this event special for the children?

We are in need of socks which are distributed to the needy who come to the church office and for our Salvation Army Canteen activity which we will be doing on January 23rd and again on October 23rd.  We can also use tooth brushes and sample size tooth paste, shampoo and conditioner.

This is going to be a year to remember!   Everyone is helping to make plans for 2010.  We will be having many special events, both new and old.  We want to repeat our successful events and make them even more successful!

Don’t sit on the sidelines - become involved and help us to reach out to our community for new members.  Our Heavenly Father has answered so many of our prayers.  You are also welcome at our Chapel Prayer Group!  We meet every Friday at noon to pray for those on our Prayer List including our Church Congregation and Visitors and our Church Ministry Staff and Church Leaders.

Do you have any children, ages five-twelve, who would like to attend our Children’s Church?  Yes, were up and running.  Judy Williams our Youth Director takes the Kids to Classroom Two and Three following the Children’s Moment.  There have been eight to ten kids participating each Sunday but we always have room for more.

Visitors at South Shore

Christian Church

For You . . .Welcome to South Shore Christian Church!  It is our hope that you experience the love of God this morning as we worship together.  We will spend the first portion of our time worshipping through song and prayer.  Then, we will hear a message about how God’s power can change our lives, followed by the Lord’s Supper.

For Your Family . . .South Shore Children’s Ministry is a loving, nurturing environment for your young children to experience God’s love in fun and creative ways.  Our loving volunteers seek to shepherd and guide the hearts of our youth through God’s life giving word. We have a staffed nursery for your small children or they are welcome to stay in the service with you.

For Us . . .We are very excited that you have chosen to worship with us today and we would like to get to know you.  Please take a moment and fill out one of our guest info cards and place it in the offering plate as it goes by or leave in the pew where you sit.

Giving Back to God . . .

All we have is a gift from God!  One of the many ways we worship Him is to give back a portion of our resources to Him for His glory.  Our “giving back to God” time will happen during our worship through songs.  This is a celebratory time where our members and regular attendees give back to God with a cheerful heart.

Sharing In The Lord’s Supper . . .At South Shore Christian Church, the Lord’s Supper is served at an “open table”. All who accept Jesus Christ are welcome regardless of your denominational background or the method you were baptized. Children may take communion at their parents’ discretion.
