ABOUT US
We have
a predominately contemporary worship style, with Scripture-based,
dynamic sermons. While our music is mainly up-beat and Spirit-filled,
we also know the value familiar hymns and contemplative music can have.
South Shore worship gatherings are not bogged down in traditional
rituals or watered down by "Christian-lite" types of worshiping that are
more entertainment than anything else. Instead, our worship gatherings
are designed to help individuals feel the presence of the Holy Spirit in
their lives and to reveal God’s message to them.
We
understand that people seeking a meaningful faith are searching to be
part of something that brings understanding to the things they see
around them everyday. Therefore, a major goal of South Shore is to help
people apply God's message to their everyday lives and to help them in
the struggles they face in this challenging modern-day world.
"The
Shore" is a socially, economically and racially diverse congregation
located in an easily accessible, demographically diverse location. The
congregation is a blend of children, young adults, middle age and senior
members all committed to a Spirit-Driven Worship Experience.
We have
a strong commitment to Christian Education utilizing Home Teams, Sunday
School and Bible Studies to ensure that all members of the community of
faith can find the method of learning, sharing in mutual support, that
works best for them. We understand and encourage the richness of small
groups.
What We Believe:
In
God
… as revealed in the
Bible and through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
In Jesus Christ
… the Son of the
Living God, the Word made flesh, part of God’s divinity, yet fully
human; our Savior, with us always.
Baptism
… The ‘Believers
Baptism’ method and submersion. We accept, by transfer, any form of
Baptism previously experienced. "Believers Baptism" is a public
profession of faith in Jesus Christ by those old enough to make their
own decision in accepting Jesus Christ into their lives.

The
Lord’s Supper
… Communion is
celebrated at every service at South Shore. Communion is administered by
Pastors and Lay people together. All Christians who accept Jesus as
their savior, regardless of background, denomination or previous church
affiliation, are welcome at our table, where only Jesus is the Lord and
Master.
Personal Theology
… is
encouraged for each and every member of South Shore. Each of us has the
responsibility to study the scriptures and then, guided by the Holy
Spirit, derive God’s message in our life. The early years of the
Disciples Tradition birthed phrases such as “The Bible and only the
Bible” and “Where the Bible speaks we speak and where the Bible is
silent we are silent”. We are simply Christians, not Liberal,
Conservative, Evangelical, Right-wing or Left-wing Christians, just
Christians. We are not bogged down with doctrines, dogmas and creeds.
“Our only Creed is Christ!”
Inclusive Ministry
… is practiced in the
life and work of South Shore. The scripture calls us all to be
‘ministers’, encouraged to perform the churches work and ministries.
Autonomous
Congregation
While the Christian
Church (Disciples of Christ) is considered a denomination, it is not a
denomination in the usual sense. Area, Regional and General Offices act
as support entities, instead of policy makers. Area, Regional and
General Ministers do not function as Bishops or Authoritative Doctrine
enforcers, but as support staff to the individual churches and
congregations.
In many ways our
relationship to the denomination is more of an association than
hierarchy. Through the various offices and levels of our denomination we
are provided ministerial candidates, pension and insurance benefits for
our staffs, educational development, licensing guidelines and
regulations for pastors and pastor background checks for congregational
safety. The Region and Area insure pastoral integrity. In the Mission
field we have ties and access to regional, national and international
missions and mission support, such as Week of Compassion and the
Division of Overseas Ministries. Our denomination includes Schools of
Higher Education, such as Texas Christian University, Brite Divinity
School and Phillips Theological Seminary.
Each
church ‘calls’ or selects its own pastors, drafts its own by-laws and
derives its own policies and doctrines. Other than a few basic Christian
doctrines, such as “Jesus is the son of the Living God” congregations of
the Christian Church are varied and independent in their theology and
worship styles.
